In a
recent study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, the hearing centers in the brain were shown to atrophy as hearing loss worsened. The "use it or lose it" principle applies to hearing as well. The parts of the brain that process sound begin to decline due to lack of use as hearing loss progresses. The hearing centers of the brain are receiving fewer "sounds" to process and therefore begin to atrophy. That's why it's important to have your hearing evaluated and any hearing loss properly addressed as soon as the signs of loss become apparent. For more information, read this
article from Dr. Daria Stakiw.
